Treating Erectile Dysfunction Through Physical Therapy
by ACE Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Institute

Tid Bits of Info.

  • Symptoms of ED are not part of the “normal” aging process and can affect males of any age.
  • ED symptoms can be the first signs of more serious health conditions.
  • Youth hockey leagues begin with a 6 and under age group.
  • Most supplements that are advertised on the TV and radio are not going to treat the symptoms or underlying cause of ED.
  • It is predicted that at least 18 million men are affected by the symptoms of ED in the US.
  • Seek the advice and treatment of a Physical Therapist who specializes in the treatment of PFD if ED is a problem for you.

Men who suffer from Erectile Dysfunction (ED) are often successfully treated in Physical Therapy. Normally, they should not have to rely on a medicinal solution like the “little Blue Pill.”  This type of medicine comes with a variety of possible side effects such as an increased risk of heart attacks and other medical complications. Physical Therapists who specialize in treating pelvic floor disorders offer comprehensive treatment programs for ED and can restore an active sex life without the side effects associated with certain medicines.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

While erectile dysfunction has many causes, it usually involves a physical and psychological aspect.  Physical conditions such as heart disease, obesity, neurologic conditions (i.e. Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis), diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, bad habits (smoking and drinking alcohol in excess), hormonal imbalances and various metabolic conditions can all have an effect on the male’s ability to achieve an erection.

Treating Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

ED is classified as a pelvic floor disorder (PFD), and Physical Therapists who specialize in the treatment of PFDs can help a male that is experiencing ED.  Treatment protocols are non-invasive and thorough.  Many times the lack of proper muscle strength and activity in the pelvic region can be a primary cause of ED.  Lack of proper blood flow or a pooling of blood flow in the veins (venostasis) can lead to the symptoms of ED.

Patients visiting the Physical Therapist for ED will receive a discreet and thorough evaluation. Using the assessment, the Physical Therapists designs a custom treatment program for the specific patient suffering from ED.   The patient will perform specialized exercises that will enhance muscle activity in the pelvic region. The Physical Therapist might incorporate bio-feedback techniques that enhance the patient’s ability to contract the proper musculature.  There might be manual therapy techniques that are used to stimulate muscle contractions and blood flow.

Visiting a Physical Therapist who specializes in the treatment of PFDs is easy.  You do not have to have a doctor’s prescription but your insurance may require you to have a referral.  Check with your insurance company before you go.  The Physical Therapist will refer you to another specialist if your symptoms and condition cannot be corrected with Physical Therapy treatments.

Erectile dysfunction does not have to be a “normal” part of aging, but if a person does not maintain good sound health they are increasing their chances of developing the condition. There is hope for the person who has the symptoms of ED and they do not have to rely on costly medicine that might cause secondary, harmful side effects.
